Forceps

Forceps are curved metal clamps inserted through the vagina to clamp (sorry, ‘cradle’) the baby’s head during birth and bring the baby out. At one stage, the use of forceps and episiotomy was promoted to eliminate the ‘pushing’ stage of childbirth. Its use also rose with the increased use of epidurals, which hamper the mother’s ability to push.

Forceps can cause harm to both the baby and the mother and they were overused. The misuse and overuse of forceps during delivery has led them being banned completely in some hospitals. Although forceps can still play a role in some situations, their use has significantly declined, partly because caesareans are considered safer for difficult deliveries (but also partly due to a lack of obstetricians suitably trained in their use).
